The main aim of this essay is to show that, for Stevens, the concept of reality is very fluctuating. The essay begins with addressing the relationship between poetry and philosophy. I argue, contra Critchley, that Stevens’ poetic work can elucidate, or at least help us to understand better, the ideas of philosophers that are usually considered obscure. The main “obscure” philosophical work introduced in and discussed throughout the essay is Schelling’s System of Transcendental Idealism. Both a (shellingian) philosopher and a (...) (stevensian) poet search for reality. In order to understand Stevens’ poetry better, I distingush several concepts of reality: initial reality (the external world of the common sense), imagined reality (a fiction, a product of one’s mind), final reality (the object of a philosopher’s and a poet’s search) and total reality (the sum of all realities, Being). These determinations are fixed by reason (in the present essay), whereas in Stevens’ poetic works, they are made fluid by the imagination. This fluidity leads the concept of reality from its initial stage through the imagined stage to its final stage. Throughout this process, imagined reality must be distinguished from both a mere fancy and its products. Final reality is, however, nothing transcendent. It is rather a general transpersonal order of reality created by poetry/the imagination. The main peculiarity of final reality is that it is a dynamic order. It is provisional at each moment. Stevens (and Schelling too) characterizes this order as that of a work of art which is a finite object, but has an infinite meaning. Stevens calls this order “the central poem” or the “endlessly elaborating poem”. If ultimate reality is a poem created by the imagination, one may ask who is the imagining subject. I argue that this agent is best to be thought as total reality, that is, as Being. Stevens, however, maintains that if there were such an agency, it would be an inhuman agency, “an inhuman meditation”. The essay concludes, in a Derridian manner, with the claim that this agency cannot have any name; it is the “unnamed creator of an unknown sphere, / Unknown as yet, unknowable, / Uncertain certainty” (OP: 127). It is best thought as an X, as an unknown variable. Being has no name. (shrink)

Philosophical orthodoxy holds that pains are mental states, taking this to reflect the ordinary conception of pain. Despite this, evidence is mounting that English speakers do not tend to conceptualize pains in this way; rather, they tend to treat pains as being bodily states. We hypothesize that this is driven by two primary factors—the phenomenology of feeling pains and the surface grammar of pain reports. There is reason to expect that neither of these factors is culturally specific, however, and thus (...) reason to expect that the empirical findings for English speakers will generalize to other cultures and other languages. In this article we begin to test this hypothesis, reporting the results of two cross-cultural studies comparing judgments about the location of referred pains between two groups—Americans and South Koreans—that we might otherwise expect to differ in how they understand pains. In line with our predictions, we find that both groups tend to conceive of pains as bodily states. (shrink)

Based on Maldonado-Torres’s formulation of the term, we conceive the decolonial turn as a form of liberating and decolonising reason beyond the liberal and Enlightened emancipation of rationality, and beyond the more radical Euro-critiques that have failed to consistently challenge the legacies of Eurocentrism and white male heteronormativity (often Eurocentric critiques of Eurocentrism). We complement Maldonado-Torres’s account of the decolonial turn in philosophy, theory and critique by providing an analysis of the trajectories of academic philosophy and clarifying the relevance of (...) decolonising philosophy and of the decolonial turn for current efforts in transforming philosophy in face of the challenges of social movements such as the Third World Liberation Front and Black Lives Matter in the United States, and Rhodes Must Fall in South Africa and England. After a brief analysis of the trajectory and current status of philosophy as a discipline in the modern Western research university, we provide examples of the decolonial turn and of decolonising philosophy in three areas: the engagement with (1) Asian and (2) Latin American philosophies, and (3) debates in the philosophy of race and gender. This volume draws connections between Wittgenstein's philosophy and the work of Saul Kripke, especially his Naming and Necessity. Saul Kripke is regarded as one of the foremost representatives of contemporary analytic philosophy. His most important contributions include the strict distinction between metaphysical and epistemological questions, the introduction of the notions of contingent a priori truth and necessary a posteriori truth and original accounts of names, descriptions, identity, necessity and realism. The chapters in this book elucidate the relevant connections between Kripke's (...) work and Wittgenstein, specifically concerning the standard meter, contingent apriori and rule-following. The contributions shed light on how Kripke's philosophical outlook was influenced by Wittgenstein, and how mainstream analytic philosophy and Wittgensteinian philosophy can fruitfully engage with one another. Kripke and Wittgenstein will be of interest to philosophers working on Wittgenstein, Kripke, and the history of analytic philosophy. (shrink)

Formalization of the semantics of generics has been considered extremely challenging for their inherent vagueness and context-dependence that hinder a single fixed truth condition. The present study suggests a way to formalize the semantics of generics by constructing flexible acceptance conditions with comparative probabilities. Findings from our in-depth psycholinguistic experiment show that two comparative probabilities—cue validity and prevalence—indeed construct the flexible acceptance conditions for generics in a systematic manner that can be applied to a diverse types of generics: Acceptability of (...) IS_A relational generics is mostly determined by prevalence without interaction with cue validity; feature-describing generics are endorsed acceptable with high cue validity, albeit mediated by prevalence; and acceptability of feature-describing generics with low cue validity is mostly determined by prevalence irrespective of cue validity. Such systematic patterns indicate a great potential for the formalization of the semantics of generics. (shrink)

Investigations into inter-level relations in computer science, biology and psychology call for an *empirical* turn in the philosophy of mind. Rather than concentrate on *a priori* discussions of inter-level relations between 'completed' sciences, a case is made for the actual study of the way inter-level relations grow out of the developing sciences. Thus, philosophical inquiries will be made more relevant to the sciences, and, more importantly, philosophical accounts of inter-level relations will be testable by confronting them with what really happens (...) in science. Hence, close observation of the ever-changing reduction relations in the developing sciences, and revision of philosophical positions based on these empirical observations, may, in the long run, be more conducive to an adequate understanding of inter-level relations than a traditional *a priori* approach. The best-known argument for Evidential Decision Theory (EDT) is the ‘Why ain’cha rich?’ challenge to rival Causal Decision Theory (CDT). The basis for this challenge is that in Newcomb-like situations, acts that conform to EDT may be known in advance to have the better return than acts that conform to CDT. Frank Arntzenius has recently proposed an ingenious counter argument, based on an example in which, he claims, it is predictable in advance that acts that conform to EDT will do (...) less well than acts that conform to CDT. We raise two objections to Arntzenius’s example. We argue, first, that the example is subtly incoherent, in a way that undermines its effectiveness against EDT; and, second, that the example relies on calculating the average return over an inappropriate population of acts. The 'Why ain'cha rich?' argument for one-boxing in Newcomb's problem allegedly vindicates evidential decision theory and undermines causal decision theory. But there is a good response to the argument on behalf of causal decision theory. I develop this response. Then I pose a new problem and use it to give a new 'Why ain'cha rich?' argument. Unlike the old argument, the new argument targets evidential decision theory. And unlike the old argument, the new argument is sound.

A one-boxer, Erica, and a two-boxer, Chloe, engage in a familiar debate. The debate begins with Erica asking Chloe: ‘If you’re so smart, then why ain’cha rich?’. As the debate progresses, Chloe is led to endorse a novel causalist theory of rational choice. This new theory allows Chloe to forge a connection between rational choice and long-run riches. In brief: Chloe concludes that it is not long-run wealth but rather long-run wealth creation which is symptomatic of rationality.

In the Western tradition, at least since the 14th century, the philosophy of knowledge has been built around the idea of knowledge as a representation [BOU 99]. The question of the evaluation of knowledge refers at the same time (1) to the object represented (which one does one represent?), (2) to the process of knowledge formation, in particular with the role of the knowing subject (which one does one represent and how does one represent it?), and finally (3) to the (...) relationship between the representation and the represented object. Criteria of evaluation such as “validity”, “adequacy” or “truth”, as mentioned in [AMB 07], make sense only with respect to these three dimensions. An evaluation can thus (1) depend on the ontological nature of the object of knowledge, (2) relate to the relationship between subject and object—including the structures (cognitive, social) which organize this relationship, or (3) relate to the relation of similarity between the object and its representation as well. The relevant criteria of evaluation thus depend on the points of view adopted on these questions. As there are indeed a plurality of points of view in this field, the goal of this appendix is to summarize, as briefly as possible, the various positions adopted by the philosophers and to refer to the relevant texts of reference for more information (for a first outline [CHA 76, SCH 01]). The first section 1 introduces useful discussions about the philosophy of theoretical knowledge and general epistemology, from a quasi-historical perspective. Section two 2 discusses the intermediary but central notion of models. Section three 3, more exploratory, introduces an approach to simulation as “concrete experiment”. It suggests that such a frequent claim in the literature, when precisely evaluated, can, to some extent, renew both the representational and the linguistic views on simulation. (shrink)

In dit artikel onderzoek ik of de standaardbenaderingen van burgerschapsonderwijs in de Lage Landen geschikt zijn om jonge mensen voor te bereiden om de huidige politieke realiteiten tegemoet te treden, laat staan om onrecht te bestrijden. Ik laat zien waarom een nadruk op ‘democratische principes’ of de rechtsstaat de status quo waarschijnlijk niet zal veranderen zolang opvoeders er niet in slagen de aandacht voor de waarheid te cultiveren die nodig is om te kunnen oordelen over rivaliserende normatieve claims. Met name (...) op tolerantie gebaseerde interpretaties van burgerschap zullen weinig bereiken in afwezigheid van burgerlijke deugden – vooral moreel oordelen en morele moed – die nodig zijn voor dissent. Dissent omvat minimaal een bereidheid om de waarheid te spreken tegen de macht. Maar het ernstigste probleem betreffende burgerschapsonderwijs op school betreft de legitimiteit ervan, gegeven dat dat onderwijs gebaseerd is op een door de overheid opgelegd curriculum met als doel een gewenste respons op de boodschap ervan op te leggen en te conditioneren. Hypothalamic and ovarian GnRH mRNA and pituitary LH~ mRNA levels were determined by respective RNA-blot hybridizations, and ovarian GnRH and estradiol contents and serum LH levels were measured by respective radioimmunoassays. Three animal models such as 1) PMSG-treated, 2) PMSG and heG-treated immature rats and 3) proestrous stage of adult rats were used. Immature rats (25-days old) were administered with PMSG (10 iu) at 10:00 hand 48 h later with heG (10 iu) to induce ovulation. In the PMSG-injected model, hypothalamic GnRH mRNA levels were markedly augmented about 9-fold at 50 h, and pituitary LH mRNA 3-fold at 52 h after PMSG administration. Serum LH levels were increased to the preovulatory surge levels at 56 h, and ovarian GnRH mRNA levels were augmented 4-fold at 60 h after PMSG injection. Administration of heG also induced a marked enhancement in ovarian GnRH mRNA levels in comparison to the values shown in both intact and PMSGtreated rats at 52 hand 54 h, respectively. In the proestrous stage of normal adult rats, pituitary LH~ mRNA levels were peaked at 16:00 h. The preovulatory LH surge was evident at 4 h before increment in ovarian GnRH mRNA levels as shown in PMSG-treated rats. The present study clearly showed the sequential increase in hypothalamic GnRH mRNA, pituitary LH~ mRNA and ovarian GnRH mRNA levels, indicating that ovarian GnRH may play a possible role in the control of follicular maturation and the ovulation process. The standard formulation of Newcomb's problem compares evidential and causal conceptions of expected utility, with those maximizing evidential expected utility tending to end up far richer. Thus, in a world in which agents face Newcomb problems, the evidential decision theorist might ask the causal decision theorist: "if you're so smart, why ain’cha rich?” Ultimately, however, the expected riches of evidential decision theorists in Newcomb problems do not vindicate their theory, because their success does not generalize. Consider a theory that allows (...) the agents who employ it to end up rich in worlds containing Newcomb problems and continues to outperform in other cases. This type of theory, which I call a “success-first” decision theory, is motivated by the desire to draw a tighter connection between rationality and success, rather than to support any particular account of expected utility. The primary aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive justification of success-first decision theories as accounts of rational decision. I locate this justification in an experimental approach to decision theory supported by the aims of methodological naturalism. (shrink)

This article explains Kant’s claim that sciences must take, at least as their ideal, the form of a ‘system’. I argue that Kant’s notion of systematicity can be understood against the background of de Jong & Betti’s Classical Model of Science (2010) and the writings of Georg Friedrich Meier and Johann Heinrich Lambert. According to my interpretation, Meier, Lambert, and Kant accepted an axiomatic idea of science, articulated by the Classical Model, which elucidates their conceptions of systematicity. I show (...) that Kant’s critique of the mathematical method is compatible with his adherence to this axiomatic conception of science. I further show that systematicity furthers traditionally accepted logical ideals of scientific knowledge, which explains why Meier and Kant think that sciences must be ‘systematic’. (shrink)

Evidential Decision Theory is flawed, but its flaws are not fully understood. David Lewis (1981) famously charged that EDT recommends an irrational policy of managing the news and “commends the ostrich as rational”. Lewis was right, but the case he appealed to—Newcomb’s Problem—does not demonstrate his conclusion. Indeed, decision theories other than EDT, such as Committal Decision Theory and Functional Decision Theory, agree with EDT's verdicts in Newcomb’s Problem, but their flaws, whatever they may be, do not stem from any (...) ostrich-like recommendations. We offer a new case which shows that EDT mismanages the news, thus vindicating Lewis’s original charge. We argue that this case reveals a flaw in the “Why ain’cha rich?” defense of EDT. We argue further that this case is an advance on extant putative counterexamples to EDT. (shrink)

Một phần quan trọng của thách thức này là sự xung đột giữa một bên là những yếu tố có tính lịch sử và văn hóa, và bên kia là sự phát triển của công nghệ thông tin và xu hướng hợp tác quốc tế mở rộng. Nghiên cứu trường hợp của Nhật Bản có thể mang lại những bài học quan trọng trong việc xây dựng khả năng đào tạo và quản lí đạo đức nghiên cứu tại một nền khoa học mới hội nhập như Việt Nam. Discerning the decisionmaking of Kim Jong-Un and the North Korean regime on issues of peaceful engagement and warlike actions endures as a mighty challenge for U.S. intelligence analysts and policymakers. In this report, we seek to inform analysis of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) leadership decisionmaking. To do so, we use three discussion papers that were written to facilitate discussion of an interagency working group. The three papers are assembled here in a single report. The second paper outlines two different scenarios that might occur when conventional deterrence on the Korean Peninsula breaks down and the resulting decisions that North Korea’s leadership could face. The third paper assesses DPRK decisionmaking about nuclear weapon use. The report concludes with some observations, drawn from the issues covered in these three discussion papers, about DPRK decisionmaking and stability on the Korean Peninsula. (shrink)

Článek se zabývá problematickou politické korektnosti ve vztahu k feministické filosofii vědy. Zaměřuje pozornost na užší pojem politické korektnosti - hodnotově motivovanou nekorektní práci s fakty. Konstatuje, že navzdory explicitnímu soustředění feministických autorek a autorů na význam hodnot v projektu vědy nelze chápat feministickou filosofii vědy jako politicky korektní nebo jako vybízení k politicky korektní vědě. Naopak se politicky korektní argumentace v tomto užším smyslu mohou dopouštět i práce vystupující proti feministické či politicky korektní agendě ve vědě.

Este trabalho procura documentar as espécies e os usos de plantas vendidas por ervatários numa feira semanal do bairro da Tijuca na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Foi realizado entre os meses de agosto/98 e agosto/99, e participaram da pesquisa quatro vendedores, com média de 15 anos de experiência no mercado, fornecendo as plantas e informações sobre seus nomes vulgares, usos e o preparo dos remédios. A feira foi visitada regularmente e os espécimes encontrados foram coletados, fotografados, herborizados e identificados (...) através da consulta de livros, chaves e especialistas, e comparação com exemplares de herbário. A coleta resultou em 151 espécies distribuídas em 59 famílias, a melhor representada sendo Asteraceae (21), Lamiaceae (13), Solanaceae (9), Leguminosae (6), e as restantes representadas por até 5 espécies. As plantas foram classificadas em 4 categorias segundo a procedência: comprada de terceiros (16%), cultivada nos jardins particulares dos vendedores (23%), ruderal (21%), e coletada da Mata Atlântica (40%). Foram documentadas 60 utilidades medicinais e rituais, e 15 formas de preparar as ervas, o número de indicações sendo 30% para uso externo e 70% para uso interno, e a forma mais comum, o chá. Além dos dados obtidos na feira, uma descrição botânica e um levantamento bibliográfico dos usos na medicina popular e em rituais afro-brasileiros são apresentados para cada espécie. Analisa-se o papel das plantas na saúde e na vida religiosa das pessoas do bairro, o conhecimento dos ervatários e a preocupante coleta das plantas da Mata Atlântica. (shrink)

Nghiên cứu nhằm tìm hiểu mối quan hệ giữa Chánh niệm tiêu dùng, Trải nghiệm thương hiệu, Gắn kết thương hiệu và Niềm tin thương hiệu ngành công nghệ thông tin tại TP. Hồ Chí Minh. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy, Trải nghiệm thương hiệu tác động lên Niềm tin thương hiệu; Niềm tin thương hiệu tác động lên Gắn kết thương hiệu; Chánh niệm tiêu dùng tác động lên Gắn kết thương hiệu. Kết quả nghiên cứu cũng đóng (...) góp vào dòng các nghiên cứu về Trải nghiệm thương hiệu và đặc biệt là khái niệm Chánh niệm tiêu dùng, góp phần phát triển và ổn định thang đo kế thừa cho thị trường nghiên cứu Việt Nam. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the cervical posture, sleep quality, and perceived health risk of technology-addicted adolescents, young adults and their controls. -/- Methods: Adolescents and young-adults participants (n=160) were divided into four groups as addicted and non-addicted according to their age and Technology Addiction Scale scores. Cervical posture assessments were obtained by photographic analysis. Craniovertebral (CVA), craniohorizontal (CHA) and sagittal shoulder angle (SSA) values were recorded. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Scale. (...) Participants' Perceived Health Risk was evaluated with a single-item, five-point Likert questionnaire. -/- Results: The addicted participants had worse CVA than both their controls (p=0.000). Participants' CHA and SSA angles were similar in addicted groups (p=0.710 and p=0.612, respectively). Addicted adolescents had worse sleep quality than addicted young-adults (p=0.005). Perceived Health Risk is low level in all groups and there were no significant differences (p=0.055). -/- Conclusion: Technology addiction affects the adolescent group more negatively than the young-adults. In the sample of adolescents and young-adults, individuals did not perceive excessive use of technological tools as a risk factor for their health. The degradation of CVA due to overuse of technological tools precedes the degradation of CHA and SSA. This can be explained by the fact that CVA is a more general angle that includes both the head- neck position and the vertebrae. It is necessary for public health and future health expenditures to educate and raise awareness of the more vulnerable adolescent group. (shrink)

Seeing how the idea of the ‘ruler cult’ and the necessary ‘myth-making’ to establish it exists to this day, as seen with the regime of a 21st century dictator like Kim Jong-il, it would be most interesting to see what parallels exist between cases of divine leadership and what we might learn about our contemporary cult rulers when looking at the dynamics of the two-millennia-old cult of the deified Emperor Augustus. As such, I have formulated a central question that (...) focuses on the reign of Divus Augustus, and in doing so provides opportunity to extrapolate from it new insights in similar but contemporary figures of leadership. A clear case of 'to understand motives in the present, one must look at actions in the past.'. (shrink)

Hasan's (1984) Model of Cohesive Harmony Analysis (CHA) represents one of the first attempts within the SFL framework to devise a relatively objective index for measuring a text's coherence. As a development of the classic "cohesion analysis"(Halliday & Hasan 1976), it probes into the coherence of a text by considering discourse structure as being based in both the syntagmatic and the paradigmatic semantic relations between components of clauses. More than thirty years later, it is still widely used as an effective (...) tool for language teaching and linguistic pathology. This paper will trace its origin, introduce its basic concepts and analytical procedure, describe its applications and consider its possible future development. (shrink)

DOENÇAS CAUSADAS POR ALIMENTAÇÃO INADEQUADA    Emanuel Isaque Cordeiro da Silva Departamento de Zootecnia da UFRPE E-mail: [email protected] WhatsApp: (82)98143-8399  INTRODUÇÃO Das muitas doenças esporádicas que podem afetar os animais, as mais frequentes afetam o aparelho digestivo ou são causadas pelo consumo de alimentos inadequados. Nas alterações que ocorrem no estômago e intestino é muito estreita a relação entre as doenças e a alimentação. Por um lado, os alimentos em más condições, sujos, ácidos, umedecidos, contaminados ou administrados (...) em excesso, causam logo lesões; igual ocorre quando muda-se bruscamente o regime alimentar ou se o animal come plantas tóxicas. Seja por uma causa ou por outra, uma vez produzida a alteração digestiva, os animais aproveitam-se do pior dos alimentos, alterando-se, como consequência, a ruminação. Com essa ingestão inadequada de alimentos inadequados e/ou contaminados ou fora do padrão nutricional, produzem-se diarreias ou constipações e inclusive o animal deixa de comer, pelo que podem ocorrer novas perturbações e confusão dos efeitos com as causas. Em outros casos, a alimentação com rações mal calculadas e deficientes em algum elemento nutritivo necessário causa, ao cabo do tempo, sintomas de carências minerais e vitamínicas, e inclusive doenças que podem ser graves. DIARRÉIA  Quando as fezes expelidas pelos animais são mais líquidas do que o normal, são alteradas ou saem mais frequentemente do que o habitual, diz-se que têm diarreia. Na verdade, é um sintoma que pode ser devido a causas muito diversas. Frequentemente são produzidas por algum alimento inadequado ou por germes infecciosos cujas toxinas alteram o intestino. Se são graves podem levar o animal à óbito, sobretudo quando o mesmo é jovem. Para evitá-las há de se tomar precauções higiênicas como as seguintes: 1. Não dar aos lactentes mais leite do que o devido; ao preparar os leites artificiais devem ser utilizadas as proporções recomendadas pela casa que vende o produto e a temperatura adequada. As amas de leite automáticas e os recipientes que tenham contido leite devem ser lavados muito bem. Os restos de leite tornam-se, ligeiramente, em um ambiente propício para o aparecimento de nichos de micróbios. 2. Não utilizar os restos alimentares que ficam nos comedouros; estes devem ser limpos de cada vez, especialmente se foram administrados alimentos úmidos ou quando se tratam da alimentação de crias. 3. Não mude bruscamente a alimentação dos animais. Os alimentos novos devem ser fornecidos em quantidades muito pequenas; depois, a ração será gradualmente aumentada, à medida que os dias passam. Esse procedimento é realizável tanto para a administração de concentrados quanto para forragens. Um bom exemplo para a administração de novos alimentos é a graduação em 10/100, ou seja, colocar 10 partes do novo alimento em 100 da usada na propriedade. E ir aumentando esse percentual conforme o tempo passa. FONTE: SILVA, E. I. C. da., 2019. A tabela acima demonstra um exemplo prático realizado em uma propriedade que obteve êxito. Consiste na explicação do método do fornecimento graduado de novos alimentos na dieta dos animais, uma vez que o fornecimento precoce de grandes quantidades de ingestão de alimentos alternativos e novos, podem acarretar complicações no aparelho digestivo do animal. Note que o fornecimento de capim-elefante, sendo uma forrageira, é essencial para a alimentação e dieta dos animais, porém ela é fornecida gradativamente aos animais, e não é totalmente substituível do concentrado. 4. Não aproveitar alimentos mofados ou alterados por fermentações anormais. Se forem resíduos de alimentação humana, deve-se cozinhá-los previamente. 5. Assegurar-se que a água é potável e não está contaminada. 6. Assegurar que a ração contenha sempre alimentos ricos em vitamina A (protege a mucosa intestinal, entre outras coisas). Ao nascer, os animais devem tomar colostro suficiente para adquirir as células de defesa do organismo. 7. Evitar qualquer contato ou relação entre os alimentos e os excrementos, procurando manusear os alimentos longe do solo, das camas, dos estrumes, dos aterros ou das coisas que entraram em contato com tais matérias. Os animais com diarreia devem ficar sem comer durante um dia (em muitos casos, devem ser amordaçados para que se consiga tal feito) e depois dar-lhes alimentos leves que sejam bem digeridos. Mas o mais importante é que bebam água o suficiente para evitar a desidratação. Melhor que a água é o soro, ou água em que se dissolveram 8 g de sal e uma pitada de bicarbonato por litro. Para os animais lactantes com diarreia, além de lhes suprimir o leite, são dados dois litros de infusão de chá ou água morna na qual se tenham dissolvido 9 g de sal e 50 g de glucose por litro (estas quantidades podem ser pesadas na farmácia). Em seguida, o veterinário irá aconselhar, em cada caso, o medicamento mais conveniente e o zootecnista a dieta mais adequada. METEORISMO OU TIMPANISMO É o acúmulo de gases no aparelho digestivo, especialmente na pança dos ruminantes e no ceco dos equinos. Não podendo expelir os gases (que geralmente formam espuma com os líquidos digestivos), o ventre vai inchando e pode atingir um volume enorme. Se o processo é agudo, o animal se prostra e mal pode respirar, de modo que em pouco tempo pode vir à óbito.  Com exceção do inchaço da pança causado por acidentes nos ruminantes (pedaços de batata atravessados no esófago) ou por certas doenças (por exemplo, inchaço dos gânglios tuberculosos), o meteorismo deve-se à ingestão inadequada de alimentos. Geralmente, o meteorismo ou timpanismo ocorre em animais que são forçados a mudar bruscamente de alimentação, passando de um regime rico em minerais e vitaminas em uma pequena quantidade (concentrados) a outro rico em fibras (volumosos), saem ao pasto pela primeira vez em primaveras chuvosas, comem forrageiras molhadas ou quentes ou ingerem, em pouco tempo, quantidades demasiadas de capins, alfafa ou demais forrageiras.  Os animais propensos, devem ser alimentados tendo em conta tais circunstâncias e deve-se buscar a melhor forma de evitar tais problemas; assim deve-se evitar o pastoreio de leguminosas muito jovens ou com orvalho, e convém dar algum feno antes de sair ao pasto pelas manhãs. Não convém as farinhas muito moídas. Quando o meteorismo já se encontra presente e o animal está inchado, pode-se tentar solucionar o problema dando-lhe quarto a meio litro de óleo de soja com água, mas é pouco efetivo. Outros aconselham leite, aguardente, silicones etc., porém não se consegue grande êxito. Não devem ser fornecidos produtos como o amoníaco, ou derivados deste, uma vez que dão sabor à carne, caso o animal seja destinado ao matadouro. Às vezes se consegue algo colocando o animal em uma inclinação (terço anterior mais alto) e movendo uma corda sob a língua enquanto ele é pressionado no ventre com os punhos para forçar o arroto. Observe um dos métodos utilizados em uma propriedade para o combate ao meteorismo:   São muito úteis as sondas de borracha ou de plástico que entram pela boca ou pelas narinas do animal e chegam até a pança. Em muitos casos, esse método de introdução da sonda esofágica permite a saída dos gases e resolve-se o meteorismo; além disso, servem para administrar os líquidos necessários, quando os animais lactantes se negam a ingeri-los. As sondas utilizadas em bovinos e equídeos medem, normalmente, 2,25 m de comprimento e cerca de 25 mm de diâmetro; as utilizadas em ovinos têm 1,5 m e 5 mm de diâmetro, porém as dimensões, para ambas as espécies, podem variar. Alguns agricultores combatem o meteorismo lançando pela sonda vários litros de água quente. Outros utilizam certos detergentes antiespumantes ou poloxaleno numa dosagem de 10-12 g/animal/dia em casos de meteorismo grave, mas o que se aconselha é chamar o veterinário para que aconselhe sobre o tratamento adequado. Em casos mais graves, faz-se necessário o uso do trócar para puncionar a pança dos ruminantes (furo no lado esquerdo) ou o ceco dos equídeos (lado direito) pelo método de tratamento denominado trocaterização. É um instrumento semelhante a um punhal de folha cilíndrica colocada numa cânula ou bainha; crava-se o instrumento no lado esquerdo do animal (bovinos) e depois deixa-se no animal a cânula oca para que por ela possam sair os gases (também são fornecidos líquidos por essa passagem). Observe:                         CONCLUSÃO A mal administração de alimentos numa propriedade pode ocasionar diversos problemas futuros, dois mais expressivos foram tratados nesse breviário. Os alimentos oferecidos aos animais devem ser de qualidade igual aos disponíveis para os humanos. Alimentos em contato com microrganismos (bactérias, fungos, protozoários, vírus etc.) podem servir de vetores a inúmeras doenças. A diarreia é uma doença que pode ser evitada mediante programas rígidos de manejo sanitário dos alimentos, na administração essencial e não exagerada e no manejo dos animais no pasto e na ingestão de alimentos. O timpanismo ou meteorismo é uma enfermidade que afeta, especialmente, o rúmen de bovinos e ovinos, além do ceco de equinos; uma enfermidade que pode ser tratada ou prevenida mediante os mesmos programas de análise e segurança dos alimentos fornecidos à pasto ou à cocho para os animais. Deve-se estar atento ao que os animais comem, pois muitas doenças são facilmente tratadas quando se sabem as causas e os sintomas para que, com isso, se possa fornecer o melhor tratamento e o remédio equivalente. Philosophers of psychology debate, among other things, which psychological models, if any, are (or provide) mechanistic explanations. This should seem a little strange given that there is rough consensus on the following two claims: 1) a mechanism is an organized collection of entities and activities that produces, underlies, or maintains a phenomenon, and 2) a mechanistic explanation describes, represents, or provides information about the mechanism producing, underlying, or maintaining the phenomenon to be explained (i.e. the explanandum phenomenon) (Bechtel and Abrahamsen (...) 2005; Craver 2007). If there is a rough consensus on what mechanisms are and that mechanistic explanations describe, represent, or provide information about them, then how is there no consensus on which psychological models are (or provide) mechanistic explanations? Surely the psychological models that are mechanistic explanations are the models that describe, represent, or provide information about mechanisms. That is true, of course; the trouble arises when determining what exactly that involves. Philosophical disagreement over which psychological models are mechanistic explanations is often disagreement about what it means to describe, represent, or provide information about a mechanism, among other things (Hochstein 2016; Levy 2013). In addition, one's position in this debate depends on a host of other seemingly arcane metaphysical issues, such as the nature of mechanisms, computational and functional properties (Piccinini 2016), and realization (Piccinini and Maley 2014), as well as the relation between models, methodologies, and explanations (Craver 2014; Levy 2013; Zednik 2015). Although I inevitably advocate a position, my primary aim in this chapter is to spell out all these relationships and canvas the positions that have been taken (or could be taken) with respect to mechanistic explanation in psychology, using dynamical systems models and cognitive models (or functional analyses) as examples.
